What the Research Says About Teaching Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship education has grown into one of the fastest-expanding fields in academic research. A 2026 bibliometric study in the International Journal of Management Education pulled every research article on university-level business creation courses indexed in the Web of Science, from 1965 through 2024. The count came to 5,208 papers, growing at an average of 10.91% a year, published across 1,745 different journals.
That is a lot of research. What it hasn't settled is a much simpler question: what actually makes the teaching work.
The Field Grew; The Classroom Didn't Always Keep Up
The same bibliometric analysis maps out where the research energy has gone. A small number of topics, entrepreneurial intention, self-efficacy, gender-dominate the field. They're what the study's authors call "motor themes," meaning they're both heavily studied and well connected to the rest of the literature.
Curriculum and teaching methods sit in a different quadrant. The study classifies them as "basic themes," central to the field but comparatively underdeveloped, the kind of topic everyone agrees matters, but few papers actually dig into. In plain terms, business schools have spent two decades studying whether students feel confident and motivated to start a business, and comparatively little time studying what specific classroom design choices produce that outcome.
That gap shows up almost every time growth in the field is discussed. The same study traces the field's takeoff to 2001, when the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor launched, and 2003, when the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey began tracking entrepreneurial attitudes on campuses worldwide. Both gave researchers something to measure. Neither one, on its own, tells a professor how to build a course.
What the Research Says Goes Wrong
A 2025 study out of Indonesia gets closer to that question directly. Researchers surveyed 687 Generation Z university students across nine campuses in Makassar City and used structural equation modeling to test what actually connects entrepreneurship education to a student's real readiness to start a business.
Entrepreneurship education on its own did have a positive, statistically significant effect on readiness. But the researchers found something more specific underneath that headline result: the effect worked mainly through two skills the coursework had to actively build. They call them relational agility, the ability to form and use working relationships under pressure, and result agility, the ability to make decisions and adapt when a plan runs into a wall. Education that built those two things drove readiness. Education that stayed theoretical did not move the needle nearly as much.
The researchers put it plainly in their opening pages: entrepreneurship education "even when well-designed, often fails to significantly change students' entrepreneurial attitudes and intentions," and the reason isn't usually what's being taught. It's how. A course can cover the right material and still not produce someone ready to act on it, if it never puts a student in a position to actually build a relationship or make a real decision under pressure.
One Business School's Answer: Rebuild It With the People Who Hire Your Graduates
A 2022 case study out of Swinburne University of Technology in Australia shows what it looks like to act on that finding at the level of an entire degree.
Facing a faculty-wide restructure, the school's Master of Human Resource Management program didn't tweak a syllabus. It ran a 14-month process to rebuild the entire degree with three industry partners at the table from the start: a global manufacturing company, one of Australia's largest private health insurers, and a government-owned enterprise that builds and operates the country's wholesale broadband network.
The process started with the unglamorous part. Academics benchmarked the curricula of seven local programs and thirty more across the US, UK, and Europe before touching a single unit. Then they matched every proposed unit against the school's own mission, the government's accreditation framework, and the standards of the Australian HR Institute, the body that externally certifies HR degrees in the country. Only after that groundwork did the industry partners get involved, shaping actual assignments, sitting in on strategic HR discussions, and in some units, having students present real recommendations back to them.
The applied project units are the clearest example of what "real" meant here. Over a 12-week unit, student teams logged 114 hours of work, roughly two-thirds of it going directly toward deliverables for the partner organization, not a simulated one. Across a class of 20 students, that adds up to something close to 1,500 hours of actual consulting work delivered to three real employers, every semester the unit ran.
The relaunched degree was internally accredited within 28 weeks and approved by AHRI without objection. The program director's own account of the process, included in the paper, doesn't pretend it was smooth. Staff worried openly about "diluting" academic rigor for the sake of relevance, and one colleague warned an industry-heavy curriculum risked training students to defend the status quo rather than question it. The paper's authors argue that tension is normal and, if handled directly rather than avoided, produces a stronger result than either pure theory or pure practice alone would.
What This Means For How Colleges Build a Curriculum
Put these two studies together and a specific, testable claim emerges. Entrepreneurship and business education tend to work when students are put into situations that require them to build a relationship, make a call under pressure, and see the result, not when they're told about those situations in a lecture. The Swinburne case shows what building a curriculum around that idea looks like in practice: benchmarking, direct industry involvement in unit design, and applied projects with real deliverables and real stakes, not case studies about someone else's decisions.
The bibliometric evidence points to why this matters beyond any one program. The research base on entrepreneurship education is large and growing fast, but the part of it focused on how to actually design a course, the curriculum and teaching-methods side, remains one of the least developed corners of the field. Programs willing to co-create with industry partners aren't just following a trend. They're operating in one of the few areas of business education where the practice is genuinely ahead of the published research telling schools how to do it.
What This Can Look Like at a Community College
Swinburne had a 14-month runway and three corporate partners lined up before it touched a single unit. Community colleges usually don't have that kind of time or that kind of partner, but the same basic idea, real deliverables for a real business, already shows up in programs running right now, at a scale a community college can actually staff.
At Mesa Community College in Arizona, the Technopreneur Experience puts students who are earning certifications in app development, cloud computing, and web design onto teams that solve an actual technology problem for a real local business. The program launched in fall 2020 with backing from the Mesa Chamber of Commerce and Apple's Community Education Initiative, and sixteen Chamber member businesses signed on to take part. One student's capstone produced two working apps: one for a local coffee shop, one for a nonprofit, built through weekly team meetings with classmates and mentors.
Wake Tech, in North Carolina, runs its business administration capstone the same way. In fall 2025, close to 80 students split into 16 teams, and each team took on one real local business as a client, ranging from an established company to a brand-new startup. Each team ran an assessment of the business, built an action plan, and presented it at a public showcase. The business got real recommendations. The students got a portfolio piece and, in a lot of cases, a reference.
Montgomery College, in Maryland, built its version into an introductory computer applications class rather than a standalone entrepreneurship course. Its annual Business Case Competition, run jointly with Rockville Economic Development, Inc., pairs student teams with a real Rockville business and a question that business is actually asking, with cash prizes for the winning teams and a public presentation during finals week.
None of these programs needed a 14-month planning process. What they needed first was one clear point of contact translating between the college and the business, so an owner didn't have to learn the school's org chart to get a project moving. Brookings' 2017 toolkit on community college-employer partnerships calls this the "navigator" role, and recommends a short memo of understanding for each partnership spelling out the timeline, what the business will provide, and what students will deliver, agreed before either side commits real time.
The other piece is grading the work well. A 2016 case study out of Georgia Southern University built an 18-point rubric for a course where student pairs ran real, semester-long small businesses instead of simulated ones, and tracked how well it worked across eight years of student feedback. The rubric mattered because a client's satisfaction with the final product and a student's mastery of a specific skill are two different things, and without a rubric built to separate them, a client-facing project is hard to grade fairly.
Put together, that's a smaller, more replicable version of what Swinburne did at the graduate level: pick a partner, define one clear deliverable, name someone to manage the relationship, and build the rubric before the semester starts, not after.
